Vetting and Barring Scheme Goes LIVE...

The protection of children and vulnerable adults has been close to the top of the news agenda in the last few months, and this week saw a new, centralised Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) introduced by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 in order to further protect them.

For the moment, employers should continue with their normal procedures of making Criminal Record Bureau checks for new recruits to ensure that they do not have convictions and are not on a barred list.

From July 2010, new employees will be able to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority and be CRB-checked to assess that they are suitable to work with vulnerable groups.

The legal requirement for employees to register with the VBS and for employers to check their status comes into force in November 2010, but organisations will not need to do anything about their existing workforce until 2011. Further guidance is to be provided by the ISA in due course.
